Make your own Google!
Alexa announced that they're making their own industrial strength web crawler available to the average Web-Joe... for a price. According to Wired: "Alexa claims it's the first time that developers, students and startups will be given inexpensive access to an industrial-scale web crawler -- the same technology used by industry giants like Yahoo (Yahoo Slurp) and Google (Googlebot)."
For the imaginative and ambitious, this could lead to all kinds of crazy, independant, and lucrative, Web development.
Google's Ten Golden Rules
While this post isn't directly about AdSense, it does speak volumes about how Google thinks as a company. Newsweek recently ran an article by Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Berkeley professor/Google consultant Hal Varian detailing Google's Ten Golden Rules about how they operate in relation to their employees. Here the quick summary:
- Hire by committee.
- Cater to their every need.
- Pack them in.
- Make coordination easy.
- Eat your own dog food.
- Encourage creativity.
- Strive to reach consensus.
- Don't be evil.
- Data drive decisions.
- Communicate effectively.
